With Eadric and the Wolves, David Mullaly puts his considerable knowledge of all aspects of Viking-age England to good use, crafting a story that is both historically accurate and thoroughly engaging.—James L. Nelson, author of the Norsemen Saga

Eadric of Mercia becomes one of the most charismatic and powerful men in England, sharing a life with a Danish beauty while married to an English princess. However, haunted by the public murders of people close to him, he will be forced to choose between his eminent status and loyalty to his own Anglo-Saxon people, and his desire for justice--and revenge.

The infamous St. Brice's Day massacre in 1002 A.D. becomes a provocation for increased attacks on England and two invasions, but it is also a catalyst for decisions that Eadric will make years later. His revulsion at the genocidal impulses of the most powerful people in the land will lead him to what English historians have called the greatest betrayal of the eleventh century.

Seen as a villain by many during his lifetime and after, he is surrounded by people who casually employ treachery, and institutions that consistently act in bad faith. In this thoroughly researched novel, David Mullaly tells a story that challenges the traditional narrative about Eadric.

Appearances can be profoundly deceiving. Loyalty in the defense of evil is no virtue, and what may look like betrayal could be the only good option for a brave leader.

Eadric And The Wolves A Novel of the Danish Conquest of England edition by David Mullaly Literature Fiction eBooks

I was gifted this book by a relative who knew I would love it based on my love of historical fiction. I think she was confusing me for someone else as I don’t read historical fiction. I don’t have anything against it, but I also have no desire to read it.

Still, at this point I felt obligated to give it a shot. With any luck I’d finish the book, tell the relative in question how much I enjoyed it, and then forget about it forever. Truth be told, my expectations were very low and I was foolish for not having an open mind.

The story is an unfamiliar one to me although I’ve come across some of the names in various history classes or tv shows through the years. Now, after having read the book, I have a desire to read more historical fiction, especially that of the Viking existence in England. Most of this is based on the author’s enthusiasm for and knowledge of the subject matter. It’s obvious that this was a passion project and that passion is evident.

I read a lot of books, most of them are by well-known authors who spit out books at a rapid pace and thus I don’t often make time for someone who is an unknown as this author seems to be, at least in the literary world. Perhaps I need to broaden my horizon as this book is proof that just because someone isn’t a ‘name’ author doesn’t mean they can’t put out a great read.

Eadric And The Wolves A Novel of the Danish Conquest of England edition by David Mullaly Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This book was recommended and I am so glad I bought it. It is a perfect blend of history and fiction! The author obviously knows how to explain Viking persona; his wording is deliberate, considerate of a non-Viking reader, and character development kept me interested in the lives of many people with no confusion. I could not skip lightly through this book; the words are to be savored. I will read it again. As it was recommended to me, I recommend it to you..
This book is without any doubt fantastic, the writer took me on a Journey of a man living in Multi cultural northern Europe at the brink of the late Medieval period,. I was absolutely floored by this story line, and could not put the book down, growing up in Ireland and always wondering what life was really like for settling invaders as you know we had Many, this book provided me with an in-dept slice of life of what the challenges the people faced in an ever changing society at that time. David Mullay should never let his ink run dry, he is talented man that presents the life of a man from youth to manhood that makes you feel your a fly on the wall inside the world that Eadric lived.
if you enjoy history and want to dive into real life at that time this is a must read
earnestly this is the best book I have read in a very long time, and the Man that put it all together should be celebrated from the highest pulpit
Thanks Dave for taking me on this Journey and hopefully many's the reader will be taken a-back like I was, ....look very forward to the sequel??
Listen anybody reading this review do yourself a favor and threat yourself to a great story,
Wonderful and exciting Viking historical fiction regarding Eadric of Mercia. History regards Eadric as a villain, but Mullaly's book gives a plausible, well intentioned man caught in a power struggle with forces greater than himself. Easy to read and filled with knowledge and historical truth of those who lived in that age, Viking tradition, the give and take between Pagan and Christian, and Viking culture. Highly recommend for both the Viking expert, and those interested in learning more about the Viking age.
Historical fiction is not my preferred genre, but it is good to step out of one's comfort zone once in a while and I am glad that I did. Well researched, this novel is set during the turn of the eleventh century during the Viking battles for control of England. The book was an easy read and the plot moved quickly. The characters were well written, not one dimensional heroes and villains, but, much like real life, flawed people with complex motives. I enjoyed watching Eadric grow from a young boy into an honorable man who strives to make good choices in difficult circumstances. The plot had plenty of action, realistic descriptions of historical battles and a few unexpected twists and turns. Highly enjoyable with a little history lesson thrown in!
Although not my typical genre, I absolutely loved this book. Rather than dry history, the characters are richly developed by this talented new writer. It was easy to care about them immediately, which hooked me on the story. The detail of the lifestyle at the turn of the first millennium was in depth and beautifully, yet starkly described. Deep political divides are seamlessly intertwined with the few peaceful experiences of the main character, Eadric. This novel has it all, personal development, overcoming obstacles, military tactics, betrayal, success, failure, and a startling ending that actually made me gasp.
This is a fantastic read. This book is well-written, engaging (a real page-turner), and filled with enough romance, political intrigue, and battle scenes to keep anyone's attention. I was initially a bit skeptical of the content given that I do not have a keen interest in medieval history. However, the way the story in this book is presented, the day-to-day details and higher romance/political/military intrigue plots are equally engrossing. As a bonus, you get some education on this period in medieval English history, as the story is based on real persons - and there is a great "explanation" chapter at the end, in which the author provides his research and background details of the history, as it is known. Not to be missed.
